Brief Introduction

Type 431 is a nickel-alloyed martensitic stainless steel, heat-treatable and magnetic. Compared with 410 and 420 martensitic grades, the addition of nickel delivers superior toughness and better corrosion resistance. It can be quenched and tempered to achieve high tensile strength, good hardness and impact resistance, making it the best corrosion-resistant grade among conventional martensitic stainless steels. It is widely used for highly stressed components under moderate corrosive environments such as marine atmosphere and fresh water. Its final properties depend on heat treatment, surface finish and service conditions.

   • Yield strength (0.2% offset): ≥450 MPa
   • Elongation: ≥15%
   • Hardness: ≤241 HBW
2. Quenched & tempered typical range
   • Tensile strength: 900–1350 MPa
   • Yield strength: 700–1080 MPa
   • Elongation: 15–20%
   • Hardness: HRC 35–50
   • Good Charpy impact toughness even at high hardness level
