EN 1.4418, DIN X4CrNiMo16-5-1, 165M stainless steel round bars
1.4418 is a corrosion and acid resistant soft martensitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum steel
(martensitic-austenitic-ferritic mixed structure).
1.4418 Stainless is a martensitic stainless steel specially designed for those applications requiring
high mechanical properties combined with improved corrosion resistance relative to traditional martensitic steels.
1.4418 Stainless is also offered as an enhanced machining variant, 1.4418 stainless, which obtains an enhanced
machinability characteristic through controlled addition of sulfur without
degrading strength or corrosion resistance. 1.4418 Stainless contains differentiated micro constituents
for easier machining production.
For any application requiring high strength, high hardness, and corrosion resistance similar to 304
stainless. Many applications can be found in fields like automotive, industrial, and others,
where a combination of high mechanical properties and a good corrosion resistance is critical.
This alloy has been specified in pressurized fuel systems for direct injected engines, fittings on fuel rails, fuel pumps,
and injector bodies.

1.4418 steel is a corrosion and acid resistant, soft martensitic chrome-nickel-molybdenum steel (martensitic-austenitic-ferritic mixed structure). It exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in aggressive media.
Material 1.4418 typically provides a strong combination of good toughness values and high strength.
1.4418 can be polished and is suitable for use at temperatures between -30°C and 300°C.
It is often used for mechanically and corrosively stressed components, such as pump shafts, centrifuge parts, water turbine parts in the chemical industry, automotive and aerospace industry, shipbuilding, and mechanical engineering.

Forging: If 1.4418 requires forging, it needs to be initially slowly heated to 800°C. This is followed by rapid heating between 1150°C and 1180°C. 1.4418 can then be forged between 950°C and 1180°C and cooled in a furnace, dry ashes, or other media.
Welding: 1.4418 steel can be welded with all common methods due to its low carbon content.
Corrosion resistance: 1.4418 is not susceptible to intergranular corrosion. Compared to other martensitic, stainless steel grades, 1.4418 exhibits higher resistance to corrosion due to its higher alloy content.
It also features high corrosion resistance to alkalis, weak acids, and oxidizing acids such as nitric acid. 1.4418 is resistant to fatigue and stress corrosion.
Machining: Machinability can be improved by adding small amounts of sulphur (up to max. 0.03%). However, this may have adverse effects on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of 1.4418.
Cold working: Cold working is possible, although cold heading is not typically carried out with 1.4418 material.
